Paper Abstract:
Poetic expression and use of language. Aristotle's views in the "Poetics." Distinction between interpretation and creation. Metaphor as a linguistic mechanism to help the poet reach meaning. Wordsworth's discussion of the poet's relationship to the materials of poetry. Nietzsche's discourse and poetry/art as an artifact of culture. Poetic form of Rimbaud, Gertrude Stein.

Paper Introduction:
How poetry is created and how the creation is experienced are related but distinct aspects of the poetic enterprise. Aristotle expects "the man who possesses the master-art of poetic interpretation" to have a command of distinct "modes of utterance" or the elements of language (Poetics 53), such as the kind of statement (interrogative, declarative, request) being made. But he also distinguishes between interpretation and creation, explaining that criticism directed at poetry that does not conform to the critic's notion of what form poetic expression "should" take is inferior to criticism that seeks to identify what that expression "is." That is why he condemns Protagoras's "carping criticism of Homer" for (as Protagoras thinks) not understanding the difference between a prayer and a command (Poetics 53). Nevertheless, Aristotle makes the point that poetic style

Paper Abstract:
The evocative power of this figure of speech. The power of metaphors to create meanings by simple comparisons; to extend the senses of words. Metaphor in poetry. Aristotle's POETICS. Emily Dickinson, Wordsworth and the Romantics essence of poetic diction. Post-Romantics; Rimbaud; Nietzsche. Examples.

Paper Introduction:
Metaphor: Its Power and Uses It is a commonplace of elementary-school studies that a metaphor is "a figure of speech, an implied analogy in which one thing is imaginatively compared to or identified with another, dissimilar thing" (Morner and Rausch 131). But as Morner and Rausch explain, metaphors are not necessarily isolated to specific comparisons. Rather, a metaphor may be extended, or "sustained throughout the work and function[] as a controlling image" (132). MacArthur refines the definition even further, noting that metaphor, as a figure of speech, is specifically not literal (653). Metaphorical intent and form lend power to poetic diction, and such diction can be found not only in verse but also in drama and prose. Obviously, metaphor is embedded in mimesis, or imitation, since art that imitates life or behavior cannot, however precise it

Paper Abstract:
Life, career, influences, style, themes of 11th Cent. Persian poet & writer on religious subjects, focusing on his travel book "Safarnama."

Paper Introduction:
Nasir-i Khusraw was an eleventh-century Persian poet and writer on religious subjects who also wrote an account of his seven years of travel to Palestine, Arabia, and Egypt. His poems and religious writings have remained influential, especially for adherents of Ismaili Islam in Central Asia and Iran. But Nasir's account of his travels, the Safarnama, was not translated into English in its entirety until 1986. The book provided little unique information but it offered a coherent, first-hand picture of the sights of Jerusalem, Mecca, and Cairo and interesting, if limited, insights into an eleventh-century personality. Recently, however, scholars have begun to connect the circumstances of Nasir's long journey and his unusual itinerary with the fact of his, perhaps well-established, conversion to Ismaili beliefs. Since Nasir's permanent contribution was to the

Paper Introduction:
Though scholars agree that The Twelve was the last of Aleksandr Blok's great poems there is far less agreement over the meanings of the poem and the source of its greatness. One of the principal points of debate is whether this is a political poem or a personal poem about death and salvation. Reeve, for example, states bluntly that the poem "has no political theme" (208) while, according to Masing-Delic, "the energies released by historical dynamics are so powerful in The Twelve that a leap to the era of the Third Testament is imminent" (197). Strong arguments are made on both sides of the question. But the strength of the opposing positions should serve as an indication that there may be more to The Twelve than these somewhat limited points of view assume. As Stankiewicz notes, it is not surprising "that a poem built on such blatant contradictions" as

Paper Abstract:
Life & work of 19th Cent. French Symbolist poet.

Paper Introduction:
The poetry of Arthur Rimbaud is often explained in terms of his biography. Such an approach is often used for literary figures, though many critics find that it is less important than the form and content of the literary works themselves. In the case of Rimbaud, however, the relationship between his life and his work has become a focus because he seems to have lived in a way that expressed certain poetic and non-conforming attitudes, while it is also possible to find a number of links between Rimbaud's life and certain images that recur in his poetry: "A revolutionary both in his life and in his art, Rimbaud exerted a radical influence on the scope and direction of French poetry." As a poet, Rimbaud is considered innovative, and his accomplishment as a poet is all the more remarkable considering how little he wrote and how young he was when he died. He is

Examines themes of justice, identity, hospitality, the gods, women, epic similes.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine selected themes in Homer's Odyssey. The plan of the research will be to set forth the pattern of ideas and events in The Odyssey in general terms and then to discuss how the poem treats the idea of justice, the question of identity revelation and testing, the notions of hospitality and inhospitality, the roles of the gods in the work, the portrayals of women, and the means by which epic similes emerge in the work. The action of The Odyssey involves the wanderings of Odysseus, who travels by an extremely indirect route back to home and hearth where his faithful and patient wife Penelope awaits him and where he kills all the suitors who have been courting her in his absence. The journey takes twenty years because Odysseus is repeatedly thrown off course, wandering the Mediterranean area in a

Development, themes, subjects of Chilean's love poems, his life & career; focusing on [Cien Sonetos de Amor].

Paper Introduction:
Pablo Neruda: Cien Sonetos de Amor Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 in Parral but was raised chiefly in Temuco (Pring-Mill xvi). Christened Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basualto, he adopted the name "Pablo Neruda" out of fear his father would blame his poetry for his poor grades in math (Pring-Mill xvi). Pring-Mill argues Neruda's poetry was influenced profoundly by his childhood in southern Chile, as demonstrated by the range of natural objects that supplied Neruda's imagery (xvi). In addition, the geographical background of his life took on a thematic importance in his later poetry as he began to use it as the substructure for his view and interpretation of the world (Pring-Mill xvi). Neruda's first poem was published when he was fourteen years old. While at the Liceo de Hombres of Temuco, Neruda worked for

Paper Abstract:
Examines poet's views on love & creative writing as expressed in his poetry & his relationship with Beatrice.

Paper Introduction:
In La Vita Nuova, Dante expresses his views on romantic love and literary creation, arguing essentially that the two are inextricably bound together. This does not mean that as love goes, so necessarily goes literary creation. To the contrary, Dante seems clearly to be saying at times that the most critical periods in his relationship with Beatrice have produced the most passionate and remarkable poetry. The study will argue that the process whereby Dante comes to understand and experience love in a mature, spiritual and transcendent sense is a process which for him requires the recording of his experiences in poetry which crystallizes those experiences for his vigilant examination. Love for Dante is a means of spiritual and creative awakening. To a poet of passion such as Dante, what matters is not a "healthy" or "non-dysfunctional" relationship such as might be

Paper Abstract:
Compares poems' views on pain & talking as means to either higher consciousness or continued ignorance.

Paper Introduction:
This study will compare and contrast two poems--"On Pain" and "On Talking"--from Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. The poems call for comparison and contrast because of the similar way that the poet treats different subjects. In both cases, Gibran sees his subject as being full of contradictions and disparate possibilities. He sees both pain and talking as entities which can be used as tools for the peaceful liberation of the self and consciousness or as ways for the individual to remain in a state of turbulence and ignorance. Gibran sees pain and talking as dependent on the perception and wisdom of the individual for their values, purpose and definition. They are not necessarily good or bad in and of themselves. The prophet is asked to speak on pain, and he says that pain is a necessary factor in the awakening of the self and the soul.

Paper Abstract:
Major poets, works, styles, themes, politics, historical influence of first two decades of 20th Cent.

Paper Introduction:
The Russian civilization developed a culture rich in poetry. It was a culture that came to a roiling boil with the Silver Age, roughly the first two decades of the 20th Century (Todd lxviii), then came to a wall of near-crushing silence with Josef Stalin's ascension to power. But Russian poets did not stop talking, and the Silver Age never died. Russian poetry of the Silver Age remained a living inspiration to Russian poets up through the end of the communist era. Yevgeny Yevtushenko writes with excitement of his 1972 "Adventures": smuggling to the West the poems of Aleksandr Blok (1880-1921) in the handbag of movie star Marina Vlady (Yevtushenko li). Fifty year-old poems treated like the lyrics of a rock star pop song - and feared by the Soviet government with the danger of a bomb!

Political, religious, symbolic, supernatural & cultural significance of theme of death in 20th Cent. Spanish poet's work.

Paper Introduction:
DEATH AND THE ART OF FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA The writer's art is generally a process of transforming the foundational substance of one's life into written language. A causal relationship, then, can easily be established between exterior events in a writer's life and subsequent works that follow. However, Drawing conclusions regarding a writer's work and events that follow is not an easy process. A critic must avoid creating causal relationships out of coincidental ones. To do so may create a fascinating mythology for an author, but it also risks facile analysis. Creating non-existent connections is shoddy criticism. In the case of the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, the temptation to infer causality is nearly irresistable. His body of work is utterly saturated with images of violent and brutal death. It examines death from numerous angles, as well as exploring

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes heroism of protagonist, symbolism, loyalty, role of God, structure of epic medieval poem.

Paper Introduction:
The character of Roland in the epic poem The Song of Roland may be partially a historical character, a knight in the court of Charlemagne and a key figure in the battle against one specific ruler in a battle at Roncesvalles in northern Spain. Roland and his followers represent Christian values fighting against the pagans, and the initial demand is that each ruler who comes under the sway of Charlemagne is to renounce his old religion and convert to Christianity or be put to death. The nature of Roland as a hero is somewhat different than other heroes because he is often at odds with other leaders on the same side as himself. His participation in this battle begins with what seems an act of betrayal of his stepfather. One of the reasons for the odd structure of the story is that the people of the time knew the story well already, so they knew that Ganelon would commit

Paper Abstract:
Surrealistic elements of Chilean poet's imagery, style, multicultural themes.

Paper Introduction:
Chilean poet Pablo Neruda was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. His particular passion is love poetry. In his early poetry, he was given to the use of nature imagery and wrote in a personal way characterized by a melancholy view of the world and a preoccupation with unrequited love. In later works, he moved more into surrealism, employing a freer style and surreal imagery. One of his most celebrated works is also the culmination of his move into surrealism--Residence on Earth in 1933. The poems in this work are anguished and filled with despair, structured on surreal images of nature. The attitude expressed in the poems may have been the result of the poet's own sense of loneliness at the time. Surrealism is a movement in literature and in the arts which began with a manifesto. The movement originated in France in the

Paper Introduction:
Two important works of art representing different styles from the same period of time in China are "Li Po chanting a Poem" and "Mother Monkey and Child." A comparison of the two will show the wide range of styles and expression in the Sung Dynasty and the similarities between the two artists. The works actually derive from similar impulses on the part of the artists but try to reach their goals through different methods. The works will be considered in terms of formal visual and content analyses, with some background on the artists, their circumstances, and their reason for producing these works. "Li Po chanting a Poem" is a hanging scroll produced as ink on paper in the mid-thirteenth century, during the Sung Dynasty, by Liang K'ai. How author's travel experiences enrich his poetry & develop his spiritual consciousness.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the experiences and discoveries of Matsuo Basho on his travels in The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches to determine how those experiences enriched his poetry. Basho was, at the time he first set out on his several travels, in the midst of an intensely spiritual time of self-examination. He was not merely traveling for pleasure or distraction from life's worries. To the contrary, he was seeking the ultimate truths of life. Accordingly, the discoveries Basho made on his travels were serious and profound lessons about himself and nature. Basho is not writing a travelogue, but rather a portrait of his spiritual reality as it exists at the moment of writing each particular poem. What Basho discovers again and again on his travels is that

Paper Abstract:
Describes Romantic Movement of 19th Cent. England, poet's life & career & romantic elements in three poems.

Paper Introduction:
THEME Poet Dylan Thomas was influenced in his writing by the Romantic Movement from the beginning of the nineteenth century, and this can be seen in a number of his best works, including the poems "Fern Hill," "A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London," and "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night." These and other Dylan works show the power of the Romantic style, which fit well with Thomas's interests and capabilities as a poet. ROMANTICISM The Romantic period in English literature is usually considered to extend from 1798, when Wordsworth and Coleridge published their Lyrical Ballads, to 1832, when Sir Walter Scott died. The Romantic impulse extended beyond these dates, however,

Paper Abstract:
How poet shocks readers, struggle between God and devil for speaker's soul, role of boredom, woman as temptress.

Paper Introduction:
This study will analyze Charles Baudelaire's poem "Destruction." The study will include consideration of such issues as how the poet shocks his readers, how the speaker lives in boredom, and how the boredom allows the speaker to have some sense of security. Some of the ways in which Baudelaire shocks the readers of the poem are fairly obvious. Certainly a final phrase such as "All Destruction's bloody bag of tricks" (Baudelaire 121) is designed to shock the reader. Certainly the poet aims to shock when he declares that the Demon "hurls into mt startled face/ the open wounds, the rags they have soaked through" (Baudelaire 121). These are meant not only to shock but to horrify. In this relatively short poem, there is much that is meant to shock, but the most obvious shocks are not on the surface of the poem. The

Examines 19th Cent. French poet's themes, tone, style, imagery, impact of his life on his work.

Paper Introduction:
The works of Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) include both poetry and prose, although only one volume of his poetry was ever published. Baudelaire is known for his sensual and erotic poetry, but also for finding the beauty within the perverse and morbid. His poetry shocked and made full use of affecting the reader's senses. Yet, towards later life the poet matured to the point where he felt only pursuing an artistic dream and goal would fulfill the individual and give him or her some chance at redemption. He turned away from sin and nearly all of his efforts were focused on a spiritual effort to free the soul from its human limitations. The senses could get in the way and were easily prey to false assumptions, distorted impressions and temptation. This report will discuss "L'Albatros," "The Flowers of Evil," and "L'Invitation au Voyage," in addition to other
