Paper Abstract:
Hand mathematical calculations vs computer math. Brief history.

Paper Introduction:
The process through which astrologers cast charts seems to be a mysterious one -– at least to the lay public. The arcane knowledge and the mathematical calculations required to construct a horoscope have made astrology the field of the professional rather than the amateur. However, the time has come to divulge a trade secret of astrology: While there is certainly a body of knowledge required to create a horoscope -– and both intuition and intelligence are certainly called for -– the mathematical abilities required to construct a horoscope are in fact relatively minimal. The relative simplicity of the technical skills involved in creating a horoscope, and the benefits of personal, hand mathematical calculations over computer-derived ones have become increasingly important as an issue as more and more computer programs are devel

Paper Abstract:
Focusing on Middle Ages & conflict with Christianity, myths, Inquisition, witch-hunting, Joan of Arc.

Paper Introduction:
Witchcraft is generally -- if circularly -- defined as the exercise of supernatural powers by people who call themselves witches. This paper examines something of the history of witchcraft in Europe, looking particularly at how ideas about witchcraft were connected at different times with ideas about Christian orthodoxy and particularly about gender. Before beginning a discussion of European witchcraft, it should be noted that witchcraft is most certainly not simply a European phenomenon but is worldwide in scope, being as common in Africa and Polynesia as it is in France. Modern scholars (particularly anthropologists and folklorists, the two groups of scholars most likely to study witchcraft) distinguish between simple sorcery, the alleged cults of diabolical witches of the Middle Ages, and the modern neo-pagan movement.

Paper Abstract:
Describes & assesses personal & anecdotal examples & claims of reincarnation.

Paper Introduction:
Reincarnation refers to the rebirth of the soul so that a person who has died at some point in the past lives again in a new form. As Ward states, "The most fundamental aspect of reincarnation is the belief that a single soul will be incarnated in more than one body," and he further notes that the term can be defined as "the doctrine of the soul incarnating or reappearing after death in another and different bodily form" (Ward 9). This has long been a religious doctrine and is now examined as a possible physical reality by people who believe that hey have lived before and that they can recall earlier lives, often under hypnosis or some other external stimulus. Many people have reported that they have recalled previous lives, often in great detail and sometimes in ways that can be checked. Some of these stories have indeed suggested that either the individual in the

Traditional Chinese magic. Origins, practitioners, believers, principles, good & bad forms, everyday applications.

Paper Introduction:
Feng shui is a form of traditional Chinese magic that remains a significant element in modern Asian culture. Adherents of this superstition employ a variety of manipulations to maintain "good" feng shui and to avoid "bad" feng shui. Even an elite metropolis like Hong Kong is not immune to the influence of feng shui practices in architecture, real estate, business, and government. Feng shui is considered a form of geomancy. Although the literal translation of feng shui means "wind and water," the significance of four environmental elements: wind, water, light, and the earth's topography are involved. These elements interact with a building's design and structure, and affect its desirability. Feng shui originated in ancient Chinese culture and has

Argues disappearances of ships & planes in Atlantic Ocean region are not caused by paranormal interference.

Paper Introduction:
The area of the Atlantic Ocean designated The Bermuda Triangle is so named because one of its corner points is the island of Bermuda. The Devil's Triangle, a popular alternative name for the area, has been examined extensively by journalists and filmmakers seeking either an insight into paranormal happenings attributed to the region or in need of a quick story to legitimize tax deduction expenses claimed for vacation trips to the locale. In either event, the stories abound. By the same token, the proliferation of stories means that Bermuda Triangle mysteries represent a small cottage industry wherein fact and fabrication are often inextricably melded. Are there natural explanations for the many ships and planes lost in the Bermuda Triangle, or are paranormal activities in evidence here? This paper will refute the claims to paranormal interference in human

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine the origins and development of alchemy, from the earliest stages of its practice and through the transitions it made from being a pseudo-science toward becoming a major foundation of the harder science of chemistry. As appropriate, reference will be made to those features of alchemy that appear to have survived the transition and continued to exercise an influence on the environment of scientific research. The origins of alchemy can be traced as far back as the Greeks and the Hellenistic period, if the historiography of the scientific community is to be taken as a guide. It seems important to include Aristotle in any understanding of the reach of alchemy for the reason that the residue of philosophical and scientific environment of intellectual discipline attributed to

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes differences in world views. Concepts, methods, rationality vs. non-rationality, mysticism.

Paper Introduction:
This paper will discuss the differences that exist between magic and science. Science seeks to rationally explain the forces of nature. By contrast, magic seeks to manipulate nonrational forces in nature. From the start, it can be seen that science and magic are polar opposites, representing the rational world and the non-rational world respectively. In addition, it can be seen that magic is concerned with using the forces of nature whereas science is only concerned with explaining them. Furthermore, "a magician, unlike a scientist, is not concerned to explain his secrets. On the contrary, he wants to preserve them as mysteries" (Cavendish, 1983, p. 1683). Because of its irrationality, scientists for the most part reject the theories of magic. They dismiss magic as being "a practice of superstition" which is "founded in illusion"

Paper Abstract:
Types, research, pro & cons, history, case studies, parapsychology.

Paper Introduction:
The Random House College Dictionary defines extrasensory perception (ESP) as "perception or communication outside of normal sensory activity, as in telepathy and clairvoyance" (1975, p. 451). Having roots in witchcraft, magic, and religion, ESP is part of a larger phenomenon referred to today as the "psi phenomena." There are two kinds of psi: 1) the input psi, and 2)the output psi. The output side of psi is psychokinesis, or the ability to use the mind to move an object or influence an outcome. ESP represents the input side of psi, and encompasses "information that one is able to obtain when no normal means of obtaining it can be demonstrated or inferred" (Miller, 1986, p. 85). Three categories of ESP have been defined: 1. Clairvoyance--the process of obtaining information about an object or event.

Paper Abstract:
Origins of theory, belief of Hindus & lack of proofs.

Paper Introduction:
According to the theory of reincarnation, the soul survives the death of the body and is reborn at a later time into another human or animal body. The origins of this idea can be found in the ancient belief system of Hinduism. In fact, the majority of Hindus today still believe in reincarnation, just as their ancestors did thousands of years ago (Cranston and Williams 233). In the Western world, by contrast, there have been few adherents of the theory of reincarnation. Although some practitioners of alternative faiths believe in the theory, most Western philosophers and scientists have rejected it completely. One exception to this rule is the University of Virginia professor Ian Stevenson, whose 1966 book, Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation, is now considered a classic in the field (Almeder 34). Despite the views of liberal-minded researchers like

Paper Abstract:
A general survey of witchcraft, past & present. A discussion of how witches practice their craft, what a real witch is like, types of witches.

Paper Introduction:
This paper will provide a general survey of witchcraft, past and present. The paper will also discuss contemporary witches, and how they practice their craft. Most experts agree that witchcraft represents "the old, pre-Christian, tribal religion of Europe" (Starhawk Truth or Dare 7). Although witchcraft is commonly associated with the use of magical spells and other anti-social behaviors, experts also agree that true witchcraft is actually nothing more than "a form of nature worship that has long been popular in alternative circles" (Lacher E1-E3). However, it is also acknowledged that there are two basic types of witches. According to the occult writer Marion Weinstein, witches may choose to follow either a negative or positive path in the practice of their craft. The negative path relates to the traditional stereotype of witches who use demons and magical

Paper Introduction:
ESP, or extrasensory perception, is a phenomenon that has been a part of social thought and culture since recorded history. Examples are rife in the historical and mythological literature in both the Eastern and Western Worlds of people who were able to sense events before the happened, able to tell things about an object just by touching it, or able to "see" objects that were hidden from them. Within the cultural milieu then, ESP is often accepted as fact certain individuals have gifts that are beyond the normal schemata. In fact, the belief in the paranormal has become so commonplace that recent statistics show that over 58 percent of Americans "claim that they have personally experienced ESP" (Myers, 1981, p. 18). Skeptical psychologists however, believe that people often fail to recognize chance events for what they

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes holistic spiritual movement. Historical-cultural background, ideals, health & healing, personal growth, music, occult practices & beliefs, Harmonic Convergence, consumer aspects.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the "New Age" movement. It will be seen that this represents in many ways the changes that society is currently undergoing in its shift from an industrial way of life to the values of an information age. The "New Age" movement is one that gradually grew out of the ideals of the 1960s counter-culture movements in America and elsewhere. In that decade, the so-called baby boom generation came of age and began exploring and developing its own value systems, which often sharply contrasted with the established standards of the previous age. There was a general understanding among the youth of that period that the world was entering the "Age of Aquarius" and that new lifestyles would have to emerge out of that transition. As such, there was an explosion of interest in

1692 MA trials, executions, key personalities, historical & social aspects.

Paper Introduction:
This research is concerned with the witchcraft hysteria that occurred in Massachusetts, specifically the witchcraft trials held in Salem Village in the year 1692. The purpose of the study is to look at the events surrounding the trails and subsequent executions, probable causes, and some of the key people involved. It is designed to look at the trials in terms of the context of their time. One of the most important factors concerning the causes of the witchcraft trials in Salem is that they were part of an historical and social tradition that encompassed not only Massachusetts in the colonial period but humankind throughout much of recorded history. The trials, contrary to popular belief, were really not an aberration, but, in part, were a segment of a continuum begun in ancient times. In fact, the

Reviews his four books on the teachings of Don Juan; focuses on the philosophy of human interaction with nature.

Paper Introduction:
This research will deal with the body awareness aspect of don Juan's teachings. The discussion will include Carlos Castaneda's four books dealing with the teachings of don Juan: The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yagui Way of Knowledge, A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan, Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan, and Tales of Power. In our society, that is, Western tradition, the duality of mind and body has been stressed, as well as the importance of the mind over the body in order to perceive and learn about the world. Western man thinks in terms of "me and my body," but the two are not separate, and mind is not greater than body. We are our bodies. Castaneda's experiences with don Juan showed him that the body, not mind/reason/order, interacts with the environment,
