However, since the site is not based on peer-reviewed articles orother substantiated data, I would not consider it appropriate except togain background knowledge on Petra. It is part of a personal website, raingod.com, belonging to Angus McIntyre, and the site has not beenupdated since 1997. What I learned from this exercise was that Internet sites I am goingto use for research purposes need to be explored to see where theirinformation comes from, how qualified the individual writing them is toprovide authoritative information, and whether the information may havebeen copied from elsewhere on the Internet or copied by other sites. Other strengths of the site include theinclusion of excellent photos of various features in Petra and the readablebut informative text that accompanies them. Although the information on the site accords with existing informationon Petra, it is not an authoritative site. Atfirst look, this appears to be a scholarly article on Petra from anarchaeological standpoint, including history of the site and a descriptionof the location and its topography. My remaining question iswhether McIntyre consulted any authoritative sources in writing the textfor his site; if so, they are not referenced on the site. For example, McIntyre's 1997 site states, "Crusaders constructeda fort there in the 12th century, but soon withdrew...." Another sitedated 2 8 has an article entitled "Lost Ancient city of Petra" whichstates, "The Crusaders constructed a fort there in the 12th century butsoon withdrew," and other sites athttp://www.nilevalleytours.com/dayTours.html andhttp://www.seejordan.org/jtb/major_attractions_petra.html also contain theexact same sentence. This is a well-organized format forpresenting the information. There is also some indication that theinformation on the site was later copied for use on other sites on theInternet. The kinds of information provided to support thisinclude a description of the historical background of Petra followed by adescription of the geography and location of the site, including the typeof soil found there.
