Whereas San Marino schools have several huge andfamous institutions that work with them on joint learning projects, LincolnHeights does not and this means the schools afford students less in the wayof exposing them to prestigious institutions and the people who work there. Community of San Marino The first Community selected is San Marino, California, a smallsuburban residential community northeast of Los Angeles. Many students receivethe free lunch program to ensure that they have the level of nourishmentthey require to con concentrate and learn in school. If confidence does wane,however, Mr. S. Indeed in an interviewwith Mr. S who is a teacher who has worked for 11 years at San Marino HighSchool, the teacher pointed out that not only do students come to schoolrested, well-fed and prepared to learn, most students also have had a greatdeal of supplemental learning which they received at a very early agethrough attending private elementary schools and/or having special tutorsif they demonstrated any learning difficulties or problems in the earlygrades. The educational background of parents is far lower thanparents in San Marino, making it more difficult for parents to help theirchildren with school work. For example, Van Galen (2 ), in an analysisof a comprehensive review of the literature conducted on the complexitiesof social class and the various educational experiences of middle versusworking class students found many of the same differences that wereobserved in this analysis. Ethnically, the community is predominately Hispanic but (like SanMarino) has experienced a strong increase in its Asian community (Chinese,Vietnamese and Cambodian) which is now closing in on becoming about thesame percentage as Hispanics. Asnoted on the San Marino High School website (2 6), the school, locatedrelatively close to both Cal Tech and the internationally known HuntingtonLibrary and Gardens, offers students advanced and honors programs andopportunities to participate in joint learning projects involving bothinstitutions. Community of Lincoln Heights The community of Lincoln Heights is a district on the East Side ofLos Angels, California located about 15 miles from the heart of DowntownLos Angeles. Also, Mr. S reported that San Marino families are "serious" aboutstudent learning, most especially the Asian families who often expect theirchildren, from a very young age, to engage in supplemental reading and mathlearning and provide them with opportunities for them to do it. There areseveral banks and a great many specialty stores selling high end products.The produce at the various grocery markets is expensive, large andunblemished. Students in Lincoln Heights do not have the level of earlypreparation that students in San Marino experienced. In the conducted interview, Ms. F stated that families in thecommunity do not often encourage their children to excel academically andpursue higher education. Over 6 percent ofstudents taking summer school do so not because of academic problems butmerely for purposes of enrichment.
