Although Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai (2 1) were able to demonstratethe applicability of their theory and its effectiveness, it is also evidentthat their interpretation discounted other equally relevant options forRalph. By using a casestudy approach involving the interviews of six individuals, Malach-Pinesand Yafe-Yanai (2 1) evaluated the relevance of the psychoanalytic-existential theory in understanding the problems faced by clients dealingwith career burnout. Through the reconnection with his father in this creativeactivity, Ralph was able to adopt a different perspective of his troubledrelationship with his superiors and take responsibility for some of theproblems. For instance, Ralph's perceptions of his superiors' lack ofappreciation could have been accurate. According to Ralph, his failure to receive sufficientrecognition from his superiors was the primary source of his feelings ofburnout. First, the directcause of the client's feelings of career burnout (from the client'sperspective) was identified. Through this analysis,Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai (2 1) presented their diagnosis of theunderlying causes of client's feelings of career burnout, which weretypically related to his relationships with his family, particularly hisparents. Nonetheless, thecritique of this theoretical approach and the article needs to be qualifiedby the fundamental fact that in the realm of career counseling, there areno right or wrong answers. Because the assessment of Ralph revealed that his career choicewas ideal for him, it was determined that Ralph should engage in cross-breeding flowers as a hobby in order to tap into his inherent creativity,thus addressing his unresolved longing and feelings of rejection by hisfather. For instance, in one of the case studies, Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai(2 1) described the case of Ralph-a successful 55-year-old technicalmanager who had worked at a large industrial company for 2 years.However, he had begun to lose interest in his job and suffered from chronicheadaches. By examining Ralph's family background and his relationships withhis parents, Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai (2 1) determined that Ralph'sdesire for recognition from his superiors was related to his relationshipwith his father who had been highly critical of Ralph while he was alive.Through the counseling sessions and the analysis of his situation using thepsychoanalytic-existential approach, Ralph realized that his difficultiesalso stemmed from his struggle to connect with aspects of his being thatwas similar to his father such as his father's creativity in cross-breedingflowers. In addition, career burnout is also related to the unconsciouscauses underlying their selection of specific occupations, which aregenerally related to their feelings about their parents. Therefore, eventhough Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai (2 1) had been successful inidentifying Ralph's problems with his family, their relevance to hisfeelings of career burnout could not be ascertained. Even more importantly, the effectiveness of thetheory in helping clients overcome their career burnout by changing theirpersonal life or career was also determined in this article. In their systematic analysis of each of the case studies, Malach-Pines and Yafe-Yanai (2 1) not only described the career and the generallifestyle of the client, but also utilized the psychoanalytic-existentialtheory to analyze the client's identifying problem. The client's family background, hisrelationship to his parents and its impact on the client's personalitydevelopment and career choice were then examined.
