Paper Introduction: Southwest Airlines began service in 1971, and has grown to become the fourth largest domestic U. S. airline, flying to 58 cities in 30 states (Southwest.com). Based in Dallas, it operates more than 2,700 flights a day with a fleet of Boeing 737s, and has one of the youngest jet fleets in the domestic airline industry. The year 2001 marked Southwest's 29th consecutive year of profitability, and in 1990, 1991, and 1992, it was the only major airline to make both net and operating profits.
