Major social problems in California California is experiencing a greater growth that it ever has, as compared to 1995 when it was the fastest-shrinking area in the nation. “Fueled by immigration, young migrants from other states, and new jobs in a reinvented regional economy, [Los Angeles County) has roared back to become the fastest-growing US county” (Wood, 2000, 2). The same situation holds true throughout most of the state. With this growth, however, comes a new host of social problems all connected with growth. The main social problems (based on the number ofinitiatives on the recent ballot include) * Education (23 initiatives ranging from school construction to school safety) * Health (15 initiatives ranging from health insurance to HMO challenges.) * Taxes (12 initiatives ranging from decreasing to cessation to taxing Internet businesses) * Crime (9 initiatives, all calling for tougher laws and for punishment of offenders) * Environment (5 initiatives concerning safe air and haz mat conditions. The division among these groups can be seen by the above initiatives,which are reasonably divided between making things better for all (theQuakers) and making things worse for all (the Puritans.)3. Liberals, who hope California willserve as the blueprint for a new society, find it encouraging" (Maharidge,1999, B7). The Puritans see the ethnicgrowth of the state as being basically against American values and aretending to leave the state, while the Quakers are staying.
