12JUDICIAL REVIEW AND LEGISLATIVE INVESTIGATION
Chief Justice John Marshall's justification for the practice of judicial review in Marbury v. Madison appealed to the writtenness of the Constitution. Judicial review is easier to justify if it is exercised with reference only to the written document.1
According to Chief Justice John Marshall, the Constitution forms the fundamental and paramount law of the nation. It follows that it is a proposition too plain to be contested, that the constitution controls any legislative act repugnant to it. It was equally plain that the judiciary must be the ultimate arbiter of what the Constitution says, for without judicial review the legislature could alter the constitution by an ordinary act. Marshall explained:

This paper will be concerned with discrimination in the workplace. Work discrimination can take the form of sexism, racism, ageism, or prejudice against gays. The threat of AIDS has caused an increase in anti-gay discrimination in recent years. Nevertheless, progress has also been made toward the elimination of job discrimination in all its forms.
Sexism is one of the most visible forms of discrimination in the workplace. many organizations are aware of this fact and thus try to seek solutions to the problem. Unfortunately, these efforts are often less than successful. For example, although the financial firms on Wall Street have established a recent campaign to "curb office sexism," the professional women who work in that environment must face "subtle discrimination" every day (Cohen, Power & Siconolfi, 1991, p. Al). In this regard, the

William Shakespeare's Othello presents the title character as a tragic hero in a way that illustrates the definition offered of the tragic hero by Aristotle. A comparison of the character in the play with the description of the tragic hero offered by Aristotle shows the similarities and also shows where Shakespeare may have differed from Aristotle.
F.L. Lucas writes about the characters of tragedy as Aristotle has delineated them and notes that they must be "good" but not perfect, appropriate or true to type, and consistent or true to themselves. Lucas says that "good" in the context in which Aristotle uses it means noble or fine, and thus the characters appropriate to tragedy are elevated characters, because "tragedy in Aristotle's theory represented men as finer than they are." More correctly, Aristotle holds that human

The game has survived civil wars and World Wars, labor struggles between owners and players, the civil rights movement and social unrest. Its history is abound with contradictions, a reflection of the changing American culture that the sport has evolved within. It is frequently viewed as a pastoral game, but it is played professionally in the middle of urban America. It is seen as a game among equals, but it has excluded as many Americans as it has included. And it is believed a conservative game, but often helps lead national no=s and values.
This research examines the sport of baseball, from its beginnings to its current status in American life. The first section of this essay will discuss the origins of baseball and

Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland is a book that tells the story of the members of German Reserve Police Battalion 101. This battalion, consisting of approximately 500 men, massacred and deported more than 80,000 Jews in and around the Lublin district of Poland. Their participation in the massacres began in July 1942 and ended in November 1943. The book raises several issues surrounding the choice to kill defenseless people: how ordinary German men became mass murderers; how not all of the massacres were committed by members of the SS; and how men voluntary chose to continue their participation in the killing assignments despite opportunities to stop. All the men in Battalion 101 had the option to exempt themselves from the killings on numerous occasions. Ultimately, Browning writes, the Holocaust took place

INTRODUCTION
Civil rights violations by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have been much discussed recently because of the scandal at the Rampart Division in which a number of officers are charged with presenting false evidence and framing innocent citizens. The LAPD has behaved badly with respect to the civil rights of citizens numerous times over its history, and there have been many attempts over to correct these abuses. The department received a major black eye because of the Rodney King incident and its aftermath, and the Christopher Commission was convened to make suggestions as to how to change the culture of the police department to make it more responsive to the community. It would appear that whatever changes were made were insufficient, and the Rampart scandal is raising the same issues
