INTRODUCTION
This research examines the pursuit of international relations by the Americans, Chinese, North Koreans, South Koreans, Soviets, and the United Nations with respect to the conduct of the Korean War. For the most part, the time frame of this research is 1945-1953. August 1945 marked the end of the Second World War, and, in late-July 1953, a truce agreement was signed between North Korea (the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea) and the United Nations Command (Committee on Foreign Relations, United States Senate, 1953). The truce agreement did not bring about an end to the war, but it did stop the fighting (United States Department of State, 1960). By July 1991, the truce will have been in effect for 38 years; however, a state of war (undeclared as such on either side) will continue to exist

Sentencing Guidelines
This paper will discuss the various issues which have arisen from the adoption of sentencing guidelines in the United States. The focus of the paper will be upon the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which are the most visible of all the sentencing guidelines which have been enacted throughout the United States since the late 1970s, and have been the most criticized. The first part of the paper will describe the background of the federal sentencing Guidelines and the Guidelines themselves. The second part will discuss the effects the Guidelines have had on sentencing in the federal criminal justice system. The third part will examine the problems which have arisen since the implementation of the Guidelines and discuss the criticisms of the Guidelines.

PROPOSITION 187
This research paper documents and argues the merits of Proposition 187 (187), a ballot initiative which was approved by California voters in November, 1994. The implementation of 187 has been stayed, pending a final resolution of legal challenges to its constitutionality and validity which will ultimately be decided by the United States Supreme Court and courts in California. If 187 is held to be valid, substantial savings will accrue to the State of California in the form of reduced public costs of dealing with illegal immigrants. Even if 187 is struck down, its passage has served a useful purpose by focusing public debate on the inequitable burdens placed on California and other border states due to the failure of the federal government to cope effectively with the problem of illegal immigration.

The purpose of this research is to examine the issue of sex and race, in particular the crossbreeding and intermingling between the black and white races during ancient and early civilizations.. The plan of the research will be to set forth in general terms the historical and anthropological context in which the intermingling of races is to be considered, and then to discuss, with reference to specific resources, the implications and consequences of the thesis that the whole of humankind can be traced to a single geographical and anthropological source.
The issue of race and sex turns on an apparently precedent issue, with the former concerned with the anthropological and ethnological origins of the human species and the latter the biological, or pre-anthropological origins. A number of sources have in recent years cited two competing hypotheses to explain human

THE AMERICAN SUPREME COURT
This research paper summarizes and evaluates the above-cited book by Robert G. McCloskey and its updating after 1958 by Sanford Levinson. The book is a comprehensive, yet distilled, history of the decisions and jurisprudence of the United States Supreme Court and its evolving role in interpreting the Constitution to meet changing conditions. The great strength of the book is its expository pithiness, its ability to condense the essentials of the Court's development in highly readable prose, a task at which McCloskey is more adept than Levinson. Its flaws flow from its aims which are at the same time too ambitious to permit abbreviated treatment of its subject matter and too limited to serve as the definitive analysis of the Court. Its major conclusions are well reasoned and supported.

The Two Worlds of The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, is a work set in seventeenth century Puritan New England. The novel was written in nineteenth century America and has been characterized by literary critic Robert Shulman (1987) as telling us more about Hawthorne’s sense of his own era than about the America of the seventeenth century. In essence, Shulman (1987, p. 180) suggests that “Hawthorne needed the disguise of the past to free his imagination so that he could create what is basically a contemporary drama.” With this assessment of the relationship between The Scarlet Letter and the world in which it was conceived as a central framework, the purpose of this report is to identify the ways in which the issues discussed in the novel invoke concerns of Hawthorne’s own era.
