Pompeii was rediscovered and excavated in the eighteenth century as one of the finest and most preserved examples of Roman architecture. Combined with the Roman influence was a pattern of development from several of the contemporaneous Mediterranean cultures of the time, which gave Pompeii a unique architectural flavor. It is this uniqueness that will become the central focus of this paper on the cultural history of Pompeii as reflected in the town's domestic architecture. The paper will begin with a brief history of the city of Pompeii, and then overview the different cultural influences which shaped the city itself. Then, the domestic architecture will be described, with a more detailed look at the influences of the Oscans, Greeks, Etruscans, Samnites, and Carthaginians. Of special note will be the influences of Rome on the city prior to the eruption of Mount

During the Egyptian Revolutionary period of 1945 through 1952, the royal family, in the person of King Farouk and his immediate successor/infant son, was replaced without major opposition for two essential reasons: the Egyptian monarchy was considered a foreign imposition on the nation, and nationalist sentiment was against all foreign dominance; and the Egyptian landed class, with whom the monarchy was aligned, was the primary target of the reform-minded revolutionaries, and that landed class, in alliance with the ruling monarchy, was too corrupted from within to present an effective opposition.
The roots of the Egyptian Revolution lie in the period when Ottoman Turk dominance crossed with British imperial expansionism. After Napoleon's ill-considered Egyptian campaign in 1798-1801, the Ottoman Empire fell into an uneasy alliance-by-

In The Italian Renaissance J. H. Plumb outlines the principal ideas that changed society in this period. He sets the development of these ideas in their social and historical contexts and examines the different contributions made by the four principal Italian cities: Florence, Rome, Milan and Venice. Plumb also summarizes the multiple images of humanity developed by the Renaissance and discusses how social changes affected women. In addition to Plumb's text, this edition features nine brief biographies of some of the men and women who were instrumental in creating the new vision of man and who embodied certain aspects of the various Renaissance notions of the ideal human being. Throughout the book Plumb attempts to convey a sense of the forces that produced this remarkable change in the European world. He succeeds in making the reader want to know a

In Max Weber's brief book The City, the author studies the emergence of cities in terms of the idea that they develop from populous settlements that are also fortified centers of trade and commerce. These centers eventually take on semi-autonomous existence as urban communities. The notion of urban community was the distinguishing feature that Weber felt made the difference between the true city and mere accumulations of large numbers of people. Martindale outlines the levels of social interaction inherent in Weber's conception of the community (Martindale, 1958, p. 54). These levels were: social actions (meaningful human interaction); social relations (arrangements of the elements of social actions); and social institutions (the abstract notion of social relations as a network of social actions). These institutions were a number of non-exclusive

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rise and fall of Mafia boss John Gotti and his Gambino Family gang. John Gotti was born in New York City, the son of John Joseph Gotti, an impoverished Italian day-laborer who had emigrated to America in 1920 with his young wife, Fannie. They had 13 children, of whom two died in infancy. John Gotti (Jr. while his father was alive) was the fifth child (Cummings and Volkman, 1990, pp. 10, 14-15).
John grew up in a neighborhood dominated by the Mafia, or the honored society, the organization, the mob, the syndicate, the outfit, or La Cosa Nostra, depending on who was talking. By whatever name, it was organized crime. While John Gotti was growing up, the most notorious capo of a Mafia gang was “Lucky” Luciano, who inevitably became an idol for Gotti to worship (Cummings and Volkman, 1990, pp. 21-29).

This research paper summarizes the military career of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and assesses his strengths and shortcomings as a military leader. Napoleon was an authentic military genius the lustre of whose accomplishments during the years (1796-1811) when his Grande Armee triumphed over all its opponents in Continental Europe was somewhat dimmed by his subsequent reverses in Russia and elsewhere during 1812-1815.
Napoleon possessed in abundance the skills of a great military strategist, tactician and commander --including sound professional training, wide-ranging but acute intelligence, extraordinary memory, strength of will and purpose, courage and boldness in taking risks, boundless energy, ruthless ambition and charismatic leadership abilities. As a strategist, he planned and organized his campaigns in order to win decisive

The American system of government owes much the governmental structures of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Those systems were different than the one we have today, but the philosophy of governance influenced how the Founding Fathers shaped the government in the New World. They also derived certain ideas from Greek and Roman originals. The government of the Roman Republic was not a democracy, though it did have democratic elements.
In the earliest era of human history, areas were ruled by chieftains or tribal leaders who became leaders by inheritance or raw power. In the earliest civilizations, an allpowerful ruler or king governed, and these early rulers like Hammurabi, Sennacherib, Xerxes, and Pharaoh Ramses I held immense power while their subjects had few rights. Many of the Greek
