America as a Consumer Nation, 1920-1970
This paper will discuss the idea that Americans began viewing themselves as consumers rather than producers during the Twentieth Century. The first part of the paper will reject the notion that the self-image of Americans changed from producers to consumers in the Twentieth Century and that a fundamental shift took place between groups and the definition of success in America. The second part of the paper will argue that Americans never held distinct self-images as producers or consumers prior to the Twentieth Century since almost all Americans were consumers in some form or another from colonial times to the present. The third part of the paper will argue that success in America has always been defined in terms of material wealth and that the changes which occurred in the Twentieth Century had to do with the g

HONG KONG TEXTILE INDUSTRY
This research paper traces and analyzes the development of the textile industry of Hong Kong and its current and probable future role in the economy of the crown colony and in world export markets. Hong Kong has a thriving textile industry which has two primary components: (1) garment manufacturing on the island and in mainland China; and (2) the provision of central services in connection with the China trade in textiles. The textile industry of Hong Kong is already undergoing and will continue during the coming decade to experience a difficult period of adjustment to changing international political and economic developments which may limit the attractiveness of the industry to private investors from outside mainland China.
Cline (1990) defines the textile industry as one which

Introduction
Companies do not conduct their business in an isolated environment. In today's global economy, events from throughout the world can affect the activities of small business in small towns in the United States. Factors which can affect business include social and cultural influence, international considerations, legal ramifications and financial influences. When OPEC imposed an oil embargo during the 1970s, it was a response to the political situation in Israel and the support that Israel received from Washington. The end result, however, is that consumers throughout the United States, who had no direct influence over any of these events, paid higher prices for their gasoline. Understanding how the business environment can affect companies is critical to their long-term success. This research examines some critical env

The Amish and Hasidic religious systems have much in common. Both are pietistic spiritual movements. Both eschew secularization and favor separation of their communities from the outside world. And both religions were founded about three hundred years ago. A shortcoming of the way of life of the Amish and Hasidim, however, is their subordination of women and their restrictions on education.
The Amish Church resulted from dissension within the Mennonite religious sect of Europe. The principle point of disagreement that caused the rift was the interpretation of the "Meidung," the practice of shunning or avoiding a member of the church who had broken a rule. The Mennonites interpreted Meidung as merely excluding the banned person from the communion table. Jakob Ammann, insisted that Meidung meant shunning the banned

A PROPOSAL FOR US IMPORT RESTRICTIONS ON CHINESE GOODS: AN ASSESSMENT OF THE ISSUE
Introduction
This research assesses a proposal to limit the dollar value of imports from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) into the United States (US) to the level of the dollar value of US exports to the PRC. This assessment is made within a context that is primarily economic as opposed to political in character. Given the political aspects the relationship between the US and the PRC, however, political factors cannot be completely ignored in this assessment. As an example, an important factor in the economic relationship between the US and the PRC is the decision by the US government to grant most favored nation (MFN) status to the PRC. Within the United States, the MFN concept is highly po

Homelessness: Overview of the Issue
Incidence of the Problem and Affected Populations
It is estimated that there are as many as four million homeless people now living in the United States, a figure that incorporates people of all ages and, most significantly, an increasing number of school-age and preschool-age children (Boxhill, 1990). Families constitute almost 38 percent of the nation's homeless, while 27 percent are children and 14 percent are single women (Hess, 2000). At all levels of American society, policy makers and program managers have worked to develop meaningful responses to the problems of the homeless, seeking prevention and intervention strategies that have the potential for reducing, ameliorating, or eliminating the problem and its negative consequences and effects. Because the homeless
