Greece (480-399 BC)
In ancient Greece during what was called the Golden Age (480-399 BC) the soil was poor--of 630,000 acres, only a third was suitable for cultivation, and the rest was impoverished by deforestation, meager rainfall, and rapid erosion by winter floods. However, the Greeks toiled to gather the surplus flow of headwaters into reservoirs, dike the channels of the streams to control the floods, reclaim the precious humus of the swamps, build thousands of irrigation canals, and patiently transplant vegetables to improve their size and quality. James Fenimore Cooper, in his novel The Last of the Mohicans, explores issues of survival, including survival of the body, the mind, and the spirit. The argument of the study will be that the element of character which allows Hawkeye to be a figure of survival is his ability to put himself in a position of humility with respect to nature and to other human beings:
Only Hawkeye, of all the whites, is competent to survive, mainly because his experience in the woods has instilled in him the humility he needs to understand the Indian and to interpret the white and red man to each other (Ringe 26).
The message of the book with respect to survival is not that an individual must be willing and able to overpower the natural or human forces which line up against him and threaten his

The purpose of this research is to examine connections between the policies, strategies, and practices of the fashion industry and the phenomenon of eating disorders. The plan of the research will be to set forth the background and context in which such connections can be credibly made and then to discuss the extent to which compelling evidence exists that there is fashion-industry culpability in the reach and severity of eating disorders, where such disorders can be interpreted as a response of fashion-industry customers to social and cultural norms that the industry either shapes or leads.
The influence of the fashion industry on medical pathology that arises from eating pathology cannot be understood without an appreciation of the ability of cultural norms to influence a whole range of human behavior within that culture. Equally relev

MIAMI INDIANS IN OHIO
The existence of the Miami Indians was recorded by French
explorers and missionaries as far back as the early seventeenth
century. In 1700 the Miami moved into Maumee Valley. They were migratory people and were part of a much larger nation. As fierce warriors they were able to retain control of much of their land for many years and became the most powerful Indian tribe in Ohio. However, their dominance fell to the power of much stronger Indian tribes and then finally, inevitably, the white man. In 1818, the United States forced the Miamis to give up their last reservation in Ohio. Today there is a strong, thriving, Miami Indian population living in Indiana. In recent years they have worked with the Federal government to restore
