THE EVOLUTION OF PAPER MONEY AND COMMERCIAL BANKING IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH 1865
The introduction of paper money in England accompanies the transition of the economy from feudalism to capitalism. The move away from the manorial production system was brought about in part because of a recognition that some goods could be bought from town sources more cheaply and in better quality than similar goods could be produced on the manors. This recognition led to a desire to produce more efficiently on the manor, so that something of exchange value would be available to acquire these outside goods. Eventually, this recognition led to a system in which more permanent stores of value, such as money, were exchanged, as opposed to exchanging perishable or quickly consu

This paper is a study of a house designed by one of the leading postmodernist architects in America, Charles W. Moore. Moore established his reputation with striking and fanciful designs that both blend his constructions into the landscape and separate them out in astonishing ways. His designs for the Sea Ranch condominium remain among the most interesting uses of space and structure, but his conception for a single-family dwelling best personifies Moore's contributions to the direction of American architecture in the latter half of the 20th century. With the Klotz House, designed and built between 1967 and 1970 in Westerley, Rhode Island, Moore offered his own distinctively arresting answers to some of modern architecture's most intriguing questions. The Klotz House stands as a fascinating example of late 1960s postmodernist architectural thinking, yet

The Reformation in England
This paper will briefly discuss the Protestant Reformation in England in the Sixteenth Century. The first part of the paper will examine the background to the Reformation by looking at the Church in England prior to the Reformation. The second part of the paper will discuss how the conflict between King Henry VIII and Rome arose and the role of Spain in precipitating a crisis. The third part of the paper will look at how Henry effected the break with Rome and why he chose to make the break political rather than theological. The fourth part of the paper will discuss how the reformation took on a more radical nature after Henry's death, how his daughter Mary attempted to return England to Rome, and how Elizabeth I established a more moderate course. The last part of the paper will briefly look at the other major Protestant movement

Charlemagne was the first Holy Roman Emperor. This title symbolized the cooperation between church and state that ensured the Roman popes' authority over the Western Church, and the Frankish emperors' authority over much of Christianized Western Europe. Under Charlemagne, King of the Franks, the influence of the Catholic Church had been strongly reinforced. A new relationship between the Frankish kings and the popes was started by Pepin, Charlemagne's father, and Boniface, the popes' legate. Their early program of church reform was greatly expanded by Charlemagne. Pepin had also given his protection to the popes when Rome was threatened by invaders, and Charlemagne continued the tradition. This situation resulted in a new interdependence between church and state. Charlemagne exerted great influence on the clergy and on church practice, and offered security to the

The Use of Disguise in "The School for Scandal"
The School for Scandal is a play about the destructive nature of the desire to spread a scandal. Beyond that, however, it also addresses the willful desire to lie and deceive if such behavior will create a scandal. It concludes that good nature never seeks to be disguised but is always simple and apparent on the surface. Sheridan cleverly uses a series of disguises for his players to reveal that innate good nature can never be disguised. First, he disguises his characters by their names. Of course, in the case of many, such as Lady Sneerwell and Mr. Snake, their name in fact reveals their character. However, in the case of Joseph Surface, the name reveals not the true character but the character he chooses to portray. Second, Sheridan allows his characters to disguise themselves to discover the true

The female characters of novelist Clyde Edgerton represent a variety of points of view for women in the South today. The characters in these novels are examples of different social and political attitudes, and Edgerton often points up what he sees as the self-centered and foolish nature of these views. Edgerton makes his characters real, in terms of both their dialogue and their behavior. These women are strong and make themselves known in what is more commonly seen as a man's world.
Edgerton's ability to write women characters has been praised by critics and readers, and Edgerton himself has noted his view of why this is so:
I've been very satisfied to know that women who read the book believe that the voice sounds

Charles Darwin in Context
Introduction
It is interesting to think about the ways in which Charles Darwin still exerts an influence on modern life. The obvious influence is in the conduct of biological science and natural history. The less obvious influence is on the political and social milieu in this country. Charles Darwin's work and thought incites some religious conservatives to fury. His view of life and the nature of human being is at the center of dispute between religious and political conservatives and their more liberal opponents.
The intent in the following pages is to briefly explore Darwin's work and world view in order to understand both the revolutionary nature of his views at the time they were promulgated
