Paper Introduction:
Entertainment Facility Fires On December 5, 1876, a major fire occurred in the Brooklyn Theater in New York when a stage backdrop ignited and 295 people were killed (Robertson, 1989, p. 8). Unfortunately, the tragedy of the Brooklyn Theater fire was followed by a fire in the Iroquois Theater in 1903, which was considered Chicago's safest theater at the time. A light set a curtain on fire and because there was insufficient planning for egress in case of a fire, human logjams and inadequate venting caused the death of 603 people. The Iroquois Theater fire, however, did provide substantial impetus to the fire prevention movement, especially in the field of public assembly occupancies (Robertson, 1989, p. 8). This paper surveys several fires that have occurred in public assembly occupancies since these earlier fires to review the social, economic and

Paper Abstract:
Discusses problems of lack of affordable housing and poverty. The historical social, economic and cultural background. Role of capitalism. Inadequate social services. Homelessness. Exodus of jobs and housing from cities to the suburbs. The mass media as part of the problem. Contends that human values must be placed above money values to solve inner-city problems.

Paper Introduction:
The housing situation that faces inhabitants of the inner cities of the United States cannot be understood without a consideration of the social, economic, and cultural history of the country. The North American colonies were founded by European immigrants who conquered, killed, and marginalized the indigenous inhabitants, and eventually herded them into reservations on worthless rural land. Tens of millions of African slaves were imported to labor on the southern cotton, sugar, and tobacco plantations, with at least as many dying in the terribly inhumane conditions of the trans-Atlantic passage as reached our shores. The North began to industrialize with construction of a cotton mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1793. During the next century, an unprecedented influx

Paper Introduction:
Poverty in America: The Case of Boston Explaining Historical Change Over the course of the past 20 years, poverty rates have fallen to include only 11.9 percent of the population. This is the lowest rate in a 20-year cycle, with median household income in the United States now at $40,816 (Michael, 2001). However, these data are deceptive. When only the poorest American are considered, in the period from about 1973 to 1998, the poorest 20 percent of Americans gained only 4 percent more income, while the wealthiest 5 percent gained 59 percent (Michael, 2001). In 1999, every racial group with the exception of Hispanics, showed the lowest poverty rates ever recorded. At the same time, the total poverty rate declined more steeply in the 1960s than during the 1990s, falling to a low of 11.3 percent

Economic restructuring of cities. Big business and multinational corporations and unplanned cities. Wilson's argument that city planning needs to include democratic values of collaboration.

Paper Introduction:
Beyond Good and Evil: Urban Planning In The Sphinx in the City, Elizabeth Wilson (1991) presents her views and those of others on the contemporary urban crisis in America. According to Wilson (1991), “The urban crisis is a crisis of inequality, and out authoritarianism” (158). Wilson’s worldview of the urban landscape views a city much like a microcosm of the State. In a democracy the State tries to meet the needs of diverse interests in the most efficient and effective manner with a limited resource pool. The interest groups with considerable power find it easier to have their needs met than those with limited power. In critiquing several views of postmodern solutions to the urban crisis, Wilson (1991) uses this analogy to undermine the strength of such arguments as those from Jane Jacobs and Richard

Paper Introduction:
Exclusionary Zoning Introduction History and Background of the Topic The urban neighborhoods of America’s major cities are deteriorating, trapping city residents in a cycle of poverty as jobs disappear and housing stock decays. In contrast, affluent suburbs are sprawling outward from the central cities, leading to the creation and maintenance of exclusionary enclaves in which predominately white, middle- to upper-middle class (and beyond) professionals are concentrated (State-sponsored growth..., 1127). In order to maintain homogeneity in such residential communities, zoning ordinances have been used which forbid multiple-family housing and require single-family housing to meet high minimum square footage requirements. By enacting

Paper Abstract:
History of construction of city in 19th & 20th centuries. Changes; urban planning; transportation; momuments.

Paper Introduction:
Cities change all the time, growing larger, replacing old buildings, redesigning roadways and connections between buildings and regions, and similar changes as the population shifts, uses change, political leadership is replaced, and other forces are brought to bear. Numerous changes were made in the overall design of the city of Paris after the nineteenth century, absorbing and in some ways altering the original plan for the city and many of the shifts that had taken place since that time. Paris was a medieval city that grew around the river Seine, and this capital city of France remained much as it had been in the medieval period into the nineteenth century. The Revolution in 1789 had changed this city very little except for the razing of the Bastille. The city at that time was considered an

Paper Abstract:
Discusses the view that the 1992 L.A riot was composed of two inter-related but significantly different riots. The first was sparked by rage in South Central, the second, more expensive one, occurred in the Latino Mid-City.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION In April 1992 Los Angeles experienced the worst riot in an American city when the first of the juries trying the police officers accused of beating motorist Rodney King acquitted those officers. This was the second major riot in Los Angeles, the first being the Watts Riot in the mid-1960s. After the earlier riot, city officials promised that they would find ways to bridge the gap between the black and white communities and reduce cross-cultural tensions in the city. Tensions between the races and among different ethnic groups continued, however, and exploded once more in the 1992 riot. Those tensions have diminished somewhat in the city, but they have not disappeared, nor have the underlying causes been fully addressed. This leaves it an open question whether these tensions might erupt once more.

Paper Introduction:
Community Redevelopment in Los Angeles: Institutional Performance and the Reasons for Success and Failure Background of the Problem Any analysis of redevelopment in the city of Los Angeles must be sensitive not only to institutional performance of the Community Redevelopment Agency but also to the broader social context in which that agency operates. Robert Putnam (1993), in his most recent work, has argued persuasively that when evaluating a particular institutions performance, it is important to view its functioning as a dependent as well as an independent variable. Thus this study will conjecture that the practical performance of
