Person Centered Counseling
Carl Rogers developed a unique approach to therapy called the Client-Centered Counseling or Person-Centered Therapy. What makes Rogers' approach distinct is that it based on a humanistic paradigm. His growth hypothesis held that there is a natural and universal tendency for individuals to seek their full potentials in life (Bozarth, 1997). The humanistic approach grew in reaction to the limiting qualities of psychodynamic theory and psychoanalysis. Rogers saw holes in aspects of psychoanalysis that prevented it from adequately explaining behavior. He and other humanists rejected determinism, and emphasized subjective meaning and positive growth.

Psychoanalytic Theory
Scientific theories continually evolve, and can be seen as a work of construction in a historical context. Despite this, two aspects in particular within psychoanalytic theory have clearly withstood the test of time: personality development; including the id, the ego, and the super-ego, and Freud's work on "The Interpretation of Dreams".
